SUR: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the breakwaters rehabilitation project in the Niyabat of Tiwi in the Wilayat of Sur, Al Sharqiyah South Governorate.

The project enhances infrastructure readiness for the fisheries sector and supports the safety and sustainability of maritime activities.

Eng Abdulnoor bin Issa al Balushi, Director of the Breakwaters Rehabilitation Project in Tiwi, said the project has reached 100 per cent completion at a cost of approximately RO 2.9 million.

He explained that the initiative aims to protect the coastline from strong waves and tidal impacts, while upgrading maritime infrastructure to improve fishing and mooring facilities.

The rehabilitation works included strengthening breakwaters and improving navigation safety, thereby enhancing protection for fishermen and supporting the sustainability of marine resources.

The project aligns with national efforts to develop fisheries infrastructure and improve ports and coastal harbours across the Sultanate of Oman.

Al Balushi noted that the project contributes to supporting the fisheries sector and promoting sustainable development in coastal communities by providing a safer environment for fishermen and facilitating the movement of fishing boats.

He added that it also helps boost fisheries production, stimulate local economic activity, and expand investment opportunities linked to the sector, while offering better protection for boats and equipment during varying weather conditions.

The project’s location in Tiwi gives it strategic importance due to the area’s active fishing operations and maritime activity, reinforcing its role in serving coastal communities and delivering sustainable economic, social and environmental benefits. — ONA
